In fact, the whole song is a song inspired by God the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was involved in this whole story. It was prophesied earlier in Luke 1 that John the Baptist (Zechariah's son) would be filled with the Holy Spirit even before his birth (v15). As soon as Zechariah's lips are opened and he has transitioned from unbelief to belief he begins to worship. He opens his mouth and begins to worship by singing a song of praise. That should be a fairly normal response to being filled with the Holy Spirit!
Notice also how the song points directly to God the Son. As soon as Zechariah is filled with the Holy Spirit (v67) he begins to speak about the person of Jesus. That's what The Holy Spirit does. He always points to the work and person of Jesus. If you see something 'spiritual' happening, and it is not pointing to Jesus, it is probably not of the Holy Spirit.
What we can learn from Zechariah's song is that whenever one is filled with the Holy Spirit the response should be praise and worship and a pointing to the person of Jesus Christ. John the Baptist would go on to prepare the way of the Lord (v76) and tell people how to find salvation (v77). He lived a life inspired by the Holy Spirit, the fruit of which was pointing people to the saviour, Jesus Christ.
Do you want to live a life of worship and pointing people to Jesus? Why not join me today in praying 'come, Holy Spirit'?
67 Then his father, Zechariah, was filled with the Holy Spirit and gave this prophecy:
68 “Praise the Lord, the God of Israel,
because he has visited and redeemed his people.
69 He has sent us a mighty Savior[g]
from the royal line of his servant David,
70 just as he promised
through his holy prophets long ago.
71 Now we will be saved from our enemies
and from all who hate us.
72 He has been merciful to our ancestors
by remembering his sacred covenant--
73 the covenant he swore with an oath
to our ancestor Abraham.
74 We have been rescued from our enemies
so we can serve God without fear,
75 in holiness and righteousness
for as long as we live.
76 “And you, my little son,
will be called the prophet of the Most High,
because you will prepare the way for the Lord.
77 You will tell his people how to find salvation
through forgiveness of their sins.
78 Because of God’s tender mercy,
the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us,[h]
79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
and to guide us to the path of peace.”
80 John grew up and became strong in spirit. And he lived in the wilderness until he began his public ministry to Israel.
