I have just watched an excellent video of the new Archbishop of Cantebury, Justin Welby, and his wife Caroline being interviewed and sharing a word at Trent Vineyard Church in Nottingham.
They talk about how they met, how they started following the Lord Jesus Christ and how God called them to Canterbury. Justin reveals that he actually thought his application to be Archbishop of Canterbury was 'a joke'! They are incredibly honest about their calling and some of the darkest times in their life, including the death of their daughter. They talk about leadership, the gift of the Holy Spirit and how people training for leadership in the Church need only keep falling in love with Jesus as 'nothing else matters'. Justin then goes on to speak about how we are now living in a time that is full of opportunity for the church. He says that all the idols of the world are falling and that when the dust settles what will be left is an empty cross and an empty tomb. They clearly have a real passion for the Church, Jesus Christ, evangelism and ministry.
As they were speaking I was filled with hope for the Church in this land and was thankful to God for calling them both to Canterbury. I think Justin is going to make an excellent Archbishop and I am excited to be serving the church at this time. The Church of England is a great Church. Let's continue to pray for it and for Justin as he begins to lead it for these coming years.
The Gospel of Jesus really does change lives!
